Results of 5th and 8th grade tests show students ‘doing worse’

The results of this year’s ‘provas de aferição’ (internal school exams) for the 5th and 8th years have flagged “a systematic decrease in the quality of learning” in Mathematics and Natural Sciences in 5th year pupils (10-11 year olds), while 8th graders are showing “considerably less consolidated learning than in previous years” in Portuguese, especially when it comes to their reading ability, according to the Ministry of Education which has pledged to bring in measures to recover the quality of learning within the Portuguese state education system.
