Retirement age to increase to 66 years, 9 months in 2026

For anyone focusing on reaching retirement age, the ‘magic moment’ is due to accelerate a little further down the line from 2026. Right now, retirement age in Portugal is 66 years and seven months – already one of the highest compared to other EU countries. But from 2026, citizens will not qualify for their old age pensions until they reach 66 years and NINE months – because, according to statistics – people are living longer (again!) The hiccup in longevity delivered by the Covid pandemic appears to have been only that, a brief lapse. People have prevailed.
