The river beach of Arnoso Santa Eulália, in Vila Nova de Famalicão, has had to be drained by the municipality following a complaint by a civic group about the colour and smell of the water, which analysis confirmed was contaminated by “various bacteria”. According to Correio da Manhã, the water was carrying salmonella, E.coli and Enterococcus – all of which are seriously prejudicial to public health. The beach is close to ‘agricultural explorations and cowsheds’, says the paper. Faced with the results of the analysis, and increasing local complaints, the council decided to ‘open the sluices’ and drain the water so that bathing is no longer possible.
