Low-cost Irish airline Ryanair will be closing its base at Faro airport in January 2020, most likely axing 100 jobs.
The news follows the announcement last week by the company’s CEO Michael O’Leary that the airline planned to shed up to 900 staff members, 500 of them pilots, as a result of various economic issues – namely Brexit, the rising cost of fuel and delays in the delivery of Boeing 737 Max jets on order.
Luciana Passo, president of the Portuguese syndicate of cabin crew has confirmed the development which comes against the continuing backdrop of looming strike action, scheduled for the five days of August 21 to 25 inclusive (click here).
Hoteliers have reacted with dismay,suggesting this could be the thin end of the wedge, and that reductions in the number of flights to the Algarve could follow.
