Safe Communities Portugal talks about public safety in Algarve

Various aspects of public safety relating to crime and civil protection will be covered

Safe Communities Portugal (SCP) will be giving a talk at an event organised by Masterclass Algarve on February 13 at Tribulum Restaurant, Almancil, from 9.45am to 11.30am.

SCP was invited by Jen Thompson from Masterclass Algarve to give a talk on various aspects of public safety relating to crime and civil protection.

The talk will be given by David Thomas, former head of training to the Hong Kong Police, former Principal Training Adviser to INTERPOL and Founder and President of SCP, which is a qualified Civil Protection Volunteer Organisation, under Portuguese law.

Masterclass Algarve hosts these free seminars and workshops in the Algarve, covering a variety of topics. Delivered in English by industry experts, these sessions aim to educate, inspire, facilitate networking and raise awareness about activities, businesses, charities, and organisations across Portugal.

The talk by David Thomas will cover the following items:

Civil Protection

  • The main threats facing the Algarve: rural fires, earthquakes and tsunami.
  • Creating awareness among young children on this topic.
  • Protecting your investment – How to make your property more resilient to rural fires.
  • Factors to take account in choosing where to live in Portugal.
  • The importance of meteorology – and how this impacts on fires.
  • Changing rural fire patterns resulting from the effects of climate change.
  • Case study (briefly) the Gambelas fires on 2022 – could people have been more prepared?
  • Survey results – among over 700 people in Portugal – How prepared people are in understanding risk and preparing for disasters.

Crime

  • The threats that children face in the use of the internet/social media and what parents can do to reduce the risk.
  • Crime trends in Algarve – including domestic violence.
  • Criminality amongst children.
  • How to report crime and what happened afterwards.
