In a bid to mark its commitment to protecting the ocean and nature, Sagres will be hosting its first ‘Paddle Out for Nature’ event this weekend (September 22-23).
The festival will begin with a ‘paddle out’ ceremony in which local surfers will be paddling out to sea and forming a “circle of union, reflection and homage”. The ceremony will start at Mareta beach in Sagres at midday.
According to organisers, this is a very old ritual that originated in Polynesia and Hawaii and is now used by surfers all over the world to pay tribute to deceased surfers or to raise awareness about social and environmental issues.
But there will be much more going on at the festival, from concerts and movie screenings to a local market, a beach clean-up and talks led by scientists from the University of the Algarve.
The musical line-up includes singer-songwriter Daniel Kemish, eclectic band Time for T and reggae group Raposeira Dub Collective who will be perfoming on Saturday, starting at 6pm.
DJ Toby One will also be the headliner of a Sunset Party which will bring the event to a close on Sunday at 7pm.
Admission is free and everyone is invited to join the festivities.
