Sahara dust hits Portugal once again

Children and elderly advised to stay indoors

Portugal’s health authority (DGS) has warned that an air mass coming from the deserts of North Africa is passing through mainland Portugal this Wednesday, carrying dust and affecting air quality.

According to the health authority, this situation will increase the concentrations of inhalable particles of natural origin in the air, affecting the regions of Alentejo, Algarve and the interior of the Centre Region.

This pollutant (inhalable particles) can affect human health, especially among the most vulnerable, such as children and the elderly, who should take special care, says DGS.

As long as this phenomenon continues, DGS recommends that the population avoid prolonged exertion, limit outdoor physical activity and avoid exposure to risk factors such as tobacco smoke.

Because of their greater vulnerability, children and the elderly, as well as people with chronic respiratory problems and cardiovascular patients, should remain inside buildings whenever possible, preferably with windows closed.

In the event of worsening symptoms, DGS advises contacting the Health Line 24 (808 24 24 24).
