São Brás’s town centre facelift continues with €500,000 upgrade

Major improvements planned for São Brás town centre

São Brás de Alportel has greenlit the second phase of its major town centre revamp.

Approved unanimously by the municipal council on January 14, this ambitious €500,000 project promises modern streets, improved accessibility, and a vibrant community space for residents and visitors alike.

The latest phase of works will take place on Rua António Rosa Brito, Dr. Silva Nobre, and Virgílio Coelho, building on the success of the first phase, completed in June 2024, which revamped key areas around the municipal market.

This phase, with an estimated budget of just over €489,000, includes new pedestrian and road surfaces, upgraded water supply and storm drainage systems, improved public lighting and road signage, and new urban furniture, landscaping, and green spaces.

The comprehensive urban renewal plan began with the creation of a circular road system around the village, followed by upgrades to key entry points and landmarks like Largo de São Sebastião and main roads such as Rua Gago Coutinho and Avenida da Liberdade.

Following the second phase, attention will shift to Jardim Carrera Viegas and its surrounding streets.

Simultaneously, São Brás de Alportel is expanding its Great Network of Accessible Walkways (Grande Rede de Passeios Accesíveis), ensuring every corner of the village is inclusive and easy to navigate.

“This ambitious project aims to modernise and enhance the town, with a focus on improving quality of life, water efficiency and accessibility, while making local businesses more dynamic and attractive,” the municipal council says in a statement to the press.

It adds that the town centre revamp also seeks to make the area safer, improve traffic flow and parking and create more green and leisure spaces.

Other major works are also underway in São Brás de Alportel, such as the revamp of its southern entrance. Representing a €760,000 investment, the revamp includes transformation of a former cork factory into a new open-air museum.
