Sardine fishermen clamour for increase in quota to 20,000 tons

Sardine fishermen in Portugal and Spain are clamouring for an increase to their quota to 20,000 tons.

They say it’s a situation of urgency, bearing in mind bans on sardine fishing that have been blighting the sector.

At a meeting in Vigo going ahead today, they were due to discuss new studies which, in their minds, open the way to increasing quotas to 13,000 tons in Portugal and 7,000 tons in Spain.

The Ministry of the Sea has not commented on this latest push to increase quotas, but is expected to react to whatever comes out of the meeting of fishing associations in Vigo, reports SIC television news.
