‘Save Alagoas Brancas’ petition to be discussed in Parliament

Petition received over 8,000 signatures

A petition to ‘Save Alagoas Brancas’ is going to be discussed in Parliament this Thursday (June 27) at 2pm.

The petition was created by the ‘Salvar as Alagoas Brancas’ (Save Alagoas Brancas) citizen’s movement – with the backing of the Cidade da Participação association, GEOTA (Study Group for Territorial and Environmental Planning) and LPN (League of Nature Protection) – and received over 8,000 signatures.

In a statement to the press, the movement says that the future is finally looking bright for the Alagoas Brancas wetland in Lagoa after a seven-year struggle to save it from the threat of development.

“However, there is still a lot of work to be done, and concern about the future of the habitat persists since the promised deed for the purchase of the area has not yet been carried out. This purchase is to be made by the Municipality of Lagoa from the developer, with support from the Environmental Fund,” the movement adds.

According to the environmentalists and citizens behind the movement, the wetland “urgently needs care and attention” due to the “many recognised, accepted, and widely publicised values of the area by specialists, academics, technicians, politicians, and citizens.

“A strategy aimed at the best renaturalisation and preservation of this wetland is essential, so it cannot and should not be forgotten,” they say.

The movement has also publicly congratulated and thanked “all who signed the petition” as well as “everyone who continues to defend the Alagoas Brancas wetland.”
