Search for missing French couple continues in Madeira

The search for the French holidaymaking couple who have been missing since Saturday off the north coast of the island of Madeira is continuing today, but the search area has been reduced to the Fajã da Areia area in São Vicente, say police. Speaking to Lusa news agency, PSP commissioner João Góis said that the organisations involved in the operation met this morning to share all the information they have so far and decided to “reduce the search area to the Fajã da Areia area”. The search has been underway since 09:00 in the lower and upper areas, namely on some adjacent pedestrian routes, said the PSP commissioner, adding that the sea conditions did not allow the use of maritime resources today. Recent years have seen a number of people go missing while walking in Madeira, but invariably these people have been men, out on their own.
