Searches underway for missing stand-up paddleboarder in Arade River

Missing man was with a friend who alerted authorities

Authorities are searching this morning for a 29-year-old man who went missing while stand-up paddleboarding in the Arade River on Thursday (August 1).

According to the national maritime authority (AMN), the searches involve lifeboat crew members from the Ferragudo lifeboat station and Portimão fire department personnel, including a team of divers, as well as Portimão maritime police officers and firefighters on land, aided by a drone.

The victim is described as a 29-year-old Mozambican man, who was stand-up paddling with a friend when he started “experiencing difficulties in the water.” He then fell into the river in the “dredged area” of the river, south of the Docapesca fish ‘lota’ (market), and has not been seen since.

His friend, who according to AMN was wearing a lifejacket, was able to make it to shore and alert authorities.

Searches began yesterday at 5.56pm until there was still daylight (9.07pm), having resumed first thing this morning.
