A section of the IC2 near Macinhata do Vouga, Serém, in the municipality of Águeda, literally collapsed (affecting both sides of the highway) late on Tuesday night. The incident mercifully caused no casualties. Firefighters called to the scene said the road “gave way on both sides of the carriageway causing a large crater, following a landslide”. According to Infraestruturas de Portugal in a statement, the landslide occurred on the slope adjacent to the IC2 causing the “collapse of the road platform at km 241.500 which forced the complete cessation of traffic on this section”. Traffic is being diverted along local roads and the alternative routes are duly marked. According to local press Jornal Bairrada, the repair of the road “could take months”.
