Silves Tour and 9th “Mini Mamã” attracts a thousand walkers

Mother’s Day event was rainy but festive

A cool spring rain didn’t dampen the spirits of Sunday’s Silves Tour and 9th “Mini Mamã”. It was Mother’s Day, and over 1 ,000 walkers strode as far as 11.5 kilometers on a course through the historic city.

First, the walkers cheered a motivational speech by Silves mayor Rosa Palma. Then, event coordinator Ricardo Percheiro led the colorful crowd in warm-up exercises. Amusingly, the rousing sound of ACDC’s “Highway to Hell” accompanied the exercises.

The Algarve sun briefly broke through in all its glory and there were miles of smiles.

Hundreds of bright green T-shirts were sold to benefit the family charity Castelo de Sonhos. For more than 25 years, this charity has been helping underprivileged Silves area families with important services. Soon, the throngs of walkers passed through the huge, arched starting gate, and they were off! So the event was a win-win. The weather, however, could have been a little kinder.
