Small polystyrene boats floated in Lisbon fountains as protest over changes to immigration laws

Small boats have started appearing in Lisbon’s fountains with messages against the end of ‘expressions of interest for immigrants’, which was one of the measures adopted recently by the government as a way of tackling the rising tide of unskilled/ unemployed immigration. The first boats were placed in the Alameda fountain, in protest against the local parish council which has refused to issue residence certificates to non-EU citizens “blocking the access to fundamental rights”, says protestors. More are expected to follow as immigrant associations fight back at the changes which they claim are not going to stop immigrants from arriving…
