SNS promises more breast cancer screenings

The executive directorate of the SNS (the State health service’s management body) has announced that the country’s breast cancer screening programme is to be ‘reinforced’ with more than €59 million to 2027, allowing for mammograms to be offered to 1.6 million women between the ages of 50-69. Elsewhere, reports point to an increasing number of cases of breast cancer appearing in women UNDER the age of 50 (ie not yet eligible for cancer screening). Per year in Portugal around 7000 new cases of breast cancer are diagnosed, with roughly 1,800 women per year dying from the disease.
