“Soapbox Derby” returns Mexilhoeira Grande

The sixth edition of the Grande Corrida de Carrinhos de Rolamentos will take place on Rua Francisco Bivar on September 17, starting at 15h00.

The town of Mexilhoeira-Grande is organising the 6th edition of its “Soapbox Derby” – the Grande Corrida de Carrinhos de Rolamentos – on September 17. The main event starts at 15:00. However, there will be plenty of entertainment over the course of the weekend.

Following the success of previous editions, the “craziest race” of its kind, according to the organisers, will feature the participation of dozens of handcrafted cars, with daring crews challenged to demonstrate their driving skills in risky manoeuvres on the winding Rua Francisco Bivar route.

The great novelty this year is the introduction of an additional night race, scheduled for 21h30 on September 16 and consisting of the Super Special F1 descent, which will connect Mexilhoeira Grande to Figueira via the Estrada – or Ladeira – da Fonte, guaranteeing lots of adrenaline under a starlit sky.

The event features five categories, taking into account the diversity and creativity of the cars (Traditional, Allegorical, Children’s, F1 and General), with vehicles being built by the drivers with any material they can find to make the most of the force of gravity, in the shape and with their decoration of choice.

There will also be plenty of musical entertainment during the two-day event. The confirmed lineup is as follows: September 16 – Sunset with DJ M. Lopes (18h00) and the 4Revival band (22h45); September 17 – DJs “O Louco e o Fusco” (on the curve of Jardim da Estátua, around 15h15), performance by David Dias (19h00) and the Generation XXI band (21h30).

The event is organised by the CIRM – Clube de Instrução e Recreação Mexilhoeirense, with the support of the Portimão City Council and the Mexilhoeira Grande Parish Council.
