Leonor, Princess of Asturias, arrives on July 12
Leonor, Princess of Asturias, heir to the Spanish throne as the eldest daughter of Felipe VI, is to visit Portugal on July 12, the office of Portugal’s president announced today, stressing this will be her first official trip abroad.
“At the invitation of the President of the Republic, Her Royal Highness the Princess of Asturias will visit Portugal on July 12,” reads a statement on the president’s official site. “On her first official trip abroad, Dona Leonor de Borbón y Ortiz, heiress to the crown, will be received at the Belém Palace by President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa.”
The note states that “the programme of this visit will have a particular focus on the protection of the environment and the conservation of the oceans, priority issues for Portugal and Spain.
“The choice of Portugal as the destination for the first official trip abroad by Her Royal Highness the Princess of Asturias reflects and strengthens the bonds of fraternity and closeness that unite the two countries,” the note concludes.
Princess Leonor turned 18 last year, a birthday celebrated by seeing her swear allegiance to the Constitution, and promise to defend Spain with her life. At the time, media reports suggested it is this young Royal who will help Spain move on from ‘scandals of the recent past’ and encourage younger citizens to find relevance in the country’s monarchy.
