St Patrick’s Society ‘Putting for Fun’ this month

A small replica of the British Open trophy is up for grabs again at this year’s ‘Putting for Fun’ tournament organised by the Algarve St Patrick’s Society.

The little claret jug is called the Carfolla Trophy, named after the society’s secretary, Helen Carfolla, organiser of the event. For two years it has graced the mantelpiece of Bill Blakey who lives in Albufeira. After wins in 2012 and 2014, he will be contesting for it again on the morning of Friday, February 20 at Albufeira’s Balaia Golf Village.

Among the hot favourites this time will be last year’s runner-up, Gaynor Stapleton of Tavira. She stands a much better chance of victory this year. Last year she played while recovering from a broken arm.

It will be the eighth year the event has been held over all 18 holes at Balaia Village. Behind the intense rivalry on each hole, it’s really a light-hearted affair in which many of the contestants are non-golfers. Many mainly go along for the “excellent” roast lunch.

Members and non-members alike are most welcome.
