State health service under investigation for treating foreigners

IGAS, the general inspectorate of health activities, has opened an investigation into reports that the state health service (SNS) has been increasingly treating foreign citizens who do not live in Portugal, and often not charging them. According to reports, no less than 102,182 non-resident foreigners were treated by or even in public hospitals last year. Of that total, more than 43,000 had no health insurance and were not covered by international agreements to receive medical assistance.
