TODAY (AUGUST 3) marks three months since the disappearance of Madeleine McCann on May 3 from a holiday apartment at the Ocean Club Resort, in Praia da Luz.
The Madeleine is Missing posters that sprang up across the region are now looking old and faded in the shop windows and there is still no sign of a happy ending for the most media-hyped disappearance in Europe in recent years.
While Madeleine’s whereabouts continue to remain a mystery, Portuguese Polícia Judiciária are still replying “nothing to say” to questions from journalists. The Resident has been told by the Portimão PJ office that Inspector Olegário Sousa, the spokesman for Madeleine case, is still on holiday, with no information forthcoming about when he will return.
So, The Resident contacted the heads of the investigation, Gonçalo Amaral, coordinator of the Portimão department, and Guilhermino Encarnação, director of the Faro district PJ. Both officials delegated assistants to say they are not available and, consequently, not releasing any updates on the case.
At Praia da Luz, Kate and Gerry McCann spent the week saying goodbye to various people.
The first to leave, on Saturday, were two family friends who were the hidden faces behind the Looking for Madeleine campaign, according to Gerry McCann.
On Monday, it was goodbye to the outgoing British consul Bill Henderson, who has provided them with consular support since day one. “He has said that Madeleine’s abduction is the most tragic circumstance he has had to deal with,” said Gerry McCann.
