Pedro Soares dos Santos, chairman of Portugal’s supermarket chain Jerónimo Martins (best known for its Pingo Doce outlets) has questioned the quality of the nation’s politicians. He suggests that “at the moment, the management and the poor quality” of what the country has to choose from “forces us to think about whether we need to change”. Mr Soares dos Santos was speaking at the group’s results press conference. Asked to comment on next Sunday’s legislative elections, he began by saying “I think we’ve had a good example here today. Without good management, there are no results (…) If you ask me, the weak management and the quality of our politicians make us wonder if we don’t have to change, and that, for me, is the biggest challenge”.
