Supermarkets in Lagoa

Dear Editor,
After reading your box on the changes planned for the EN125 in Lagoa, I was left thinking about how many supermarkets Lagoa may soon have.

If the rumours are true, the Continente supermarket will be the borough’s sixth supermarket (considering Apolónia is expected to open this summer).

We already have a Pingo Doce, an Intermarché, a Jumbo and an Aldi – do we really need more?

Maybe during the summer it will keep supermarkets from becoming packed with tourists, but I seriously doubt that during the other nine months of the year any of them will be doing great business.

At least a few of these supermarkets are bound to feel the effects of the overly-competitive atmosphere that will likely be created, and I hate to think about one or more of them closing down and adding more people to Portugal’s already long unemployment line.

Hopefully this is just the rambling of someone who has a very limited business perspective, but to me all these supermarkets just seem like overkill.
