The Supreme Court of Justice (STJ) announced on Thursday that it has rejected the appeal filed by Salvador Pizarro de Fezas Vital, former director of BPP bank which ‘collapsed’ owing millions of euros over 14 years ago, and that it has ordered ‘the immediate removal of the case file for enforcement of the judgement’ – meaning after years of fighting what began as a nine year six month jail term for banking fraud, Mr Fezes Vital is much nearer a prison cell.
The only question is ‘how long is his sentence’, as various changes appear to have been made to it over the years of challenges.
The former president of the bank, João Rendeiro, also held out against jail for as long as he could, before leaving the country in the hope that he could clear his name in absentia. This did not happen, and he ended up committing suicide in a South African jail.
