Running from November 30 to December 2, the Sweet Potato Festival will take place in Aljezur and is already considered the largest autumn food festival south of the Tagus River.
The festival was first held in 1998 and is a joint initiative by the municipality of Aljezur and the Association of Aljezur Sweet Potato Producers.
The event is designed to promote and preserve traditional flavours and gastronomic skills, placing emphasis on a local and very special product of recognised quality – the Aljezur sweet potato.
The festival also attempts to showcase the sweet potato in a more unconventional light and, as such, is presenting gourmet dishes using the vegetable as the main ingredient.
Restaurants and bars in the area will offer visitors the opportunity to taste the sweet potato as part of both traditional and gourmet recipes. For three days, there will be activities to be enjoyed by the whole family, such as stands promoting regional businesses, craftsmanship, workshops and local confectionary, among others.
The festival is being held at the Espaço Multiusos de Aljezur and runs from 12 noon to midnight on Friday and Saturday, and from 12 noon to 10pm on Sunday.
