Aljezur is famous for its Lyra sweet potato variety
Aljezur will host its highly anticipated Sweet Potato Festival between November 29 and December 1, shining the spotlight on its unique variety of sweet potatoes.
Taking place at the local multiuse space, the event brings together producers, chefs, bakers, restaurants, craftspeople, and musicians for a wide range of entertainment.
The star of the show is Aljezur’s Lyra sweet potato variety, which has become a “symbol of the Algarve” and is famous for its unique flavour and texture.
Local restaurants and food stalls will be participating in the celebration, serving up a variety of savoury and sweet dishes featuring the local sweet potatoes. There will also be culinary demonstrations led by acclaimed chefs, who will be sharing recipes and techniques on how to cook these sweet potatoes.
Another highlight of the event will be a sweet potato dessert competition, which will see bakers competing to create the best Lira sweet potato dessert, to be decided by a panel of experts.
There will also be a handicraft fair, featuring artisans displaying everything from handcrafted ceramics to jewellery and clothing, as well as live music performances and activities for children.
“The Sweet Potato Festival is a tribute to the local producers and farmers who sustain the tradition of growing the Lyra sweet potato and play a vital role in promoting the Algarve’s culinary heritage,” says Aljezur municipal council. “The Aljezur Sweet Potato Producers Association has been instrumental in upholding sustainable practices and ensuring the high quality of this product which has helped place Aljezur on the gastronomic map,” it adds.
The event is free to visit, and free parking is available near the venue, with a tourist train available to transport visitors from the parking areas to the venue.
