Q: Graham, my husband constantly tells me that I am not aiming properly. He says sometimes I aim 40 meters to the right of target. What tips do you have for a proper alignment?
A: Hi Judy, poor alignment and aim is a common problem and leads to many swing faults. The compensation required to hit the ball to the target can wreck your swing.
The easiest way is to pick a spot in front of the ball in the direction where you want the ball to start. It can be an old leaf, a broken tee or a tuft of grass; anything naturally available.
Stand behind the ball and pick your spot which should be ideally 30 – 60cms in front of the ball. Now step to the ball and aim the club face first to your mark that you have selected and then place your feet. It is very important to aim the club first and then stand correctly. I see so many players stand to the ball and place their feet first and try to guess where they are aiming.
Practice your aim on the range. Once you have completed your setup, lay a club on the ground parallel to the tips of your toes and step away. Now you will be able to see where you are aiming. Once confident with your new method you should be able to aim correctly on the course.
Remember, aim where you want the ball to start, so if you are playing a draw, pick a spot and aim slightly right and vice versa for a fade (right handers).
