Fake text messages and emails being sent to taxpayers
Portugal’s tax authority (AT) has warned citizens of a text message scam which aims to trick citizens into paying fake fines.
“The Tax Authority is aware that some taxpayers are receiving fraudulent text messages (SMS),” says a statement released by AT.
“The receivers of these SMS messages are maliciously led to carry out a payment to allegedly settle their tax situation,” it adds.
The Tax Authority states that these messages are “false” and that their only goal is to convince taxpayers to make “undue payments.”
The Resident is also aware of a similar scheme involving emails being sent out to taxpayers urging them to pay non-existent fines.
In order to help distinguish legitimate emails and text messages from scams, AT advises taxpayers to read its informative brochure on ‘Safety and Information’, which can be consulted online on the AT website.
