A tax of just 0.5% of Portugal’s ‘super-rich’ – a niche market of 42,000 taxpayers – would pay, three times over, for the principal measures (those with the most significant budgetary impact) approved by the country’s government since it took office in April, reports have been stressing today. It would bring in, every year, a tad above €3.5 BILLION, which is why the government is seriously considering such a levy, in line with thinking in other countries. A report by the Tax Justice Network has calculated that just a 0.5% tax would bring the State the equivalent of 6.6% of its annual tax revenue.
