Teachers protest in front of Parliament

Hundreds of teachers showed up in force outside Parliament on today (December 5) to contest the controversial exam introduced by the government to test their knowledge.

While hundreds took to the streets decrying the exam for being “humiliating”, MPs debated two petitions handed in a bid to prevent it. The test – scheduled for December 18, will be compulsory for any teacher with less than five years of experience.

João Louceiro from teachers’ union Fenprof told Lusa news agency that politicians “have the power in their hands to end this humiliating and barbaric knowledge test,” adding that the exam is “an attack on the educational system”.

Amongst the protests were claims that the exam “discriminates against teachers” and that the position of an educator must be “dignified” – while others held banners and flags declaring slogans like: “Together against the Exam”.
