Second incident since weekend, potentially linked to last week’s disturbances in capital
Ten cars were set alight in the early hours of this morning, in the parish of Benfica, Lisbon.
A 44-year-old man has been arrested.
The incidents, which took place in three streets in the parish follow on from the torching of 11 cars and three motorbikes during the night of Saturday to Sunday morning and various other acts of vandalism, and appear to be a ‘follow on’ from last week’s swathe of violent incidents that affected multiple boroughs in the capital after the police shooting dead of Odair Moniz in Cova da Moura.
Yesterday’s attacks took place on vehicles parked in Estrada de Benfica, Rua Barroso Lopes and Rua Julião Quintinha, near the Fonte Nova shopping centre.
Policing in the area was reportedly reinforced following the weekend incidents, thus this may be the reason for the timely arrest.
Meantime, president Marcelo has expressed his intention to visit the neighbourhoods most affected by last week’s violence, although he has not yet ventured any dates.
