How social is your dog?
In celebration of World Animal Day, Quarteira is set to host a special event on Saturday (October 5), aimed at testing the social skills of dogs.
The free event, which will run from 9am to 11am at Largo da Gaivota, offers an opportunity for dog owners to participate in a unique “social aptitude test” for their pets.
Participants will not only have the chance to test their dogs’ social behaviour but can also receive expert advice from on-site veterinarians. The event also includes a course designed to challenge dogs in everyday situations.
Dog trainers from four well-established schools – Iron Dog Algarve (Quarteira), Dog Extreme (Vilamoura), Incríveis Tavira (Tavira), and Ricardo Lima Dog Training (Vila Real de Santo António) – will be present to guide participants through the series of tasks.
Inspired by the American Kennel Club’s “Good Citizen Dog” test, the programme aims to promote responsible dog ownership and improve the bond between pets and their owners. The exercises range from simple commands like sitting and staying to more complex tasks, such as walking calmly on a leash, socialising with other dogs, passing through tunnels, and even interacting with strangers. Dogs will also undergo a microchip check, among other challenges designed to simulate real-life scenarios.
The event is organised by the Portuguese Kennel Club and the parish council of Quarteira with the collaboration of several regional dog trainers and the Vilamoura Veterinary Clinic.
