The Fall Line’ in Putting

Q: I hear on TV they talk about ‘The Fall Line’ in Putting. What is it and how do I find it?

A: The fall line runs through the hole from the highest point to the lowest point on the green. On a tilted green there are only two straight putts: one uphill the other downhill. This line is called the ‘Fall Line’. Any putt that is not on the fall line will have some break, depending on a combination of the slope, distance of the putt and speed of the green.

Tips to help find ‘The fall line’

When approaching the green start to look which side of the green is higher and lower. Look for the highest and lowest point. Then walk around the hole (being careful not to walk in your playing partner’s line) to refine your judgement.

Imagine throwing a bucket of water across the green and picture in which direction the water would run away. The direction will be the lowest point.

Imagine the hole filling with water until some spills out. The water will spill out at the lowest point.

From the lowest point through the hole is the ‘fall line’.

On the practice putting green workout the ‘fall line’ and practice putts from two, four and six meters. They should all be straight.
