HAVING BEEN offered the opportunity to work in the Algarve by a colleague, Dr Hendrik Luths seized the chance immediately. He is now one of the regular visiting doctors at the German Clinic in Carvoeiro who specialises in orthopaedics.
Dr. Luths told The Resident: “I came here for a new life experience,” adding that “Portugal is wonderful as I have more time to care and listen to my patients, which makes my job very satisfying.”
After graduating from Kiel University in Hamburg, Dr Luths became a Specialty Physician in Orthopaedics, Sports Medicine, Chiropractics, Acupuncture and Osteology. “I chose to be an orthopaedist as it’s a discipline that allows me to use touch and speech to give fast results to my patients.”
As well as working in the German Clinic in Carvoeiro once every few weeks, Dr Luths is a full time orthopaedic surgeon in the town of Wilhelmshaven, Germany, and is also the doctor responsible for a premier league German handball team.
Dr. Luths offers a range of treatments when in the Algarve including acupuncture, treatments for golfing injuries and even hip screening for babies, saying “we treat people of all ages and nationalities here at the clinic”.
Special insoles may also be ordered from Dr. Luths, as he creates a mould of patients’ feet and has the insoles made by a specialist in Germany. “Foot ache can often lead to back pain, which is avoidable using this method,” he said.
