The tip of the iceberg…

APAA works with schools to raise awareness about animal welfare

For many people, their lives are shaped by ‘social media’ or ‘platforms’. Like all modern communication devices, there are favourable attributes but also drawbacks.

Jenny Clarke, president of the Association for Protection of Animals Algarve (APAA), had recent first-hand experience. “Eight-tenths that’s all you see.” Jenny knows that the public at large rely on these modern tom-toms and smoke-signals to be part of society, their community. On the ‘top’ of the tipping point Jenny’s team came up against recently. Ear-tipping/notching. This is carried out by professionals worldwide to ensure the feral cat-count in their colonies is monitored. The very tip of the cat’s ear is surgically removed whilst the cat is being sterilised or treated.

“This is where education is important by working with schools and younger members of the community establishing how to be responsible for our furry friends.

“The same goes for our association. Wanda is now our up-front helpline person.” APAA’s motto ‘Here to Help’ often pushed to its limits. “Wanda recently assisted a lady with two dumped traumatised dogs, which were then passed on to APAA’s rescuers.

“The dogs were taken to Pet Park for temporary TLC, homing, screening, vet care.” Seemingly simple. However, for some reason, the lady decided to take over, becoming totally unreasonable. “Despite all our attempts to assure and reassure her, she wanted to visit the dogs, daily, at any time without announcement.” A final ultimate had to be given. Either take the dogs back, pay their bills or leave them with the professionals. “She finally saw sense. Hard for her, I know. But best for the two already traumatised dogs.”

On the plus side, Portimão Continente’s Missão charitable campaign donated €2,523 to APAA, one of the two chosen charities in 2024/2025. What a wonderful gift!

APAA members, the talented duo Paul and Pasi recently held a sellout charitable holistic health day. “We were extremely grateful, the turn-out was incredible.” Paul and Pasi donated their time and takings to APAA, together with Anita’s ‘Pop-Up’ table. A good day was had by all.

The association’s Annual General Assembly (AGA) held at Recanto dos Mouros (Silves) had a healthy turn-out, with a superb lunch to follow. All funds raised are for SNiP (Spaying & Neutering) and abandoned animals, also helping other associations and shelters in need.
