Third rape claim in Lisbon’s Martim Moniz area

Portuguese woman reports rape early this morning in hostel

A Portuguese woman reported an alleged rape early this morning at a hostel on Rua do Benformoso, in Lisbon – the street recently ‘immortalised’ by a PSP police operation just before Christmas.

According to a source from the Lisbon Metropolitan Command of the PSP, the alleged rape occurred between 2am and 5am today, with the alert being called  into 112 by a taxi driver who found the woman lying on the ground.

The same source added that it was the 112 team that called the police “after detecting signs of rape in the woman”, who was taken to the Hospital de São José to undergo relevant forensic examination.

According to the PSP, the woman has some “cognitive problems”. She has been living in an institution, but was “absent from the institution” when she was “invited to spend the night at the hostel where the rape was allegedly committed”.

The same source said that the suspect has been identified at the scene and since taken to the PSP police station and identified, but not arrested.

The case is now being investigated by PJ Judicial Police.

This is the third alleged rape reported in the last week in the same area.

The first complaint was made by an Erasmus student living in Portugal, who claims to have been the victim of abuse by two or three men, on January 19, after leaving a TVDE vehicle and heading home, at 4am in the morning, on Escadinhas da Saúde.

The second complaint came from a French citizen, who identified a TVDE driver.

Investigations are still ongoing.
