Three armed men arrested over weekend in Portimão, Olhão

One had revolver with rounds of ammo ‘ready to fire’

Algarve police arrested three young men over the weekend, all of them for carrying illegal weapons.

The arrests began on Friday when a 23-year-old man was caught driving in Praia da Rocha with a loaded gun around his waist, and various rounds of ammunition.

PSP police who made the arrest described their suspect as having an extensive criminal record and a six-year jail sentence recently handed down for drug trafficking offences/ theft and grevious bodily harm. According to reports, the young man was “awaiting the outcome of his appeal” against that jail sentence.

He has been remanded into preventive custody.

Further east in Olhão, police were called out to a case of ‘street robbery’, where the “victim had been approached by two hooded suspects who, threatened him with a gun/ knife (exact type of weapon not specified) and forced him to hand over various items in his possession”. The suspects then “fled on an electric motorbike”.

Investigations led the PSP to the motorbike, where they discovered the stolen goods in its pannier, as well as the weapon and two black balaclavas, which the suspects had used to commit their crime.

Both were ordered to report weekly into their local police station, pending prosecution/ trial.

All of the above were brought before the courts yesterday (Sunday). ND
