Three arrests so far in mega probe into torching of Lisbon bus

Incident arguably worst during October’s ‘disturbances’ around capital

Three people have been arrested as a result of the PJ operation in Loures yesterday related to the arson attack on a bus in Santo António dos Cavaleiros last month that left the driver catastrophically injured.

According to a police source, investigations are ongoing to identify the other six perpetrators, and as was stressed yesterday, ‘attempted murder’ will almost certainly be one of the charges.

The suspects are all believed to be responsible for direct attack on the bus during the wave of riots generated in Lisbon’s Metropolitan Area by the death of Odair Moniz, a Cape Verdean chef shot dead by a PSP agent in the Cova da Moura neighborhood, in Amadora on October 21.

Driver Tiago Cacais, 42, has very recently been discharged from hospital where he initially was described as ‘fighting for his life’. He has since told RTP (state broadcaster) that one of the nine hooded individuals involved in the attack pointed a gun to his head and refused to allow him off the bus before the group started hurling Molotov cocktails inside it. It is for this reason that attempted murder is on the docket. ND
