Puppies rescued from rubbish bin
In the Funchal area of Lagos, a heartbreaking discovery was made last week – eight newborn puppies discarded in a rubbish bin like trash.
Tragically, despite the best efforts of our volunteers, one of the tiniest pups succumbed to pneumonia. The rest of the litter are battling on, suffering from lung infections likely caused by their exposure and neglect.
This isn’t just an isolated incident. Every week, we see animals abandoned in appalling conditions – left to die in boxes, bags, bins. But these babies, at least, were found in time. Thanks to the incredible dedication of Ani, one of our most tireless volunteers, these pups are receiving round-the-clock care. Ani didn’t hesitate when asked to take on yet another litter.
She provides nearly 24-hour supervision, medication, warmth, and love – something these puppies have never known until now.
The road ahead is still uncertain. Some puppies are stronger than others, but they are being closely monitored and given the best possible chance. We remain hopeful.
Amid the heartbreak, there is also some good news. Several of our dogs have recently been reserved, fostered, or are on trial with wonderful families. These small victories give us strength to keep going.
But we can’t do this alone. If you find animals abandoned in bins or public spaces, do not ignore them. Contact your local GNR or PSP immediately – they are required to act. We also ask that anyone who cannot care for animals properly seeks help before things reach this point. There are always alternatives to dumping helpless lives into the rubbish.
