Tragic Saturday: two killed in Algarve and Alentejo road accidents

Three accidents registered within less than two hours on Saturday in the two southern regions

Within the span of just a few hours on Saturday (December 21), two people died and several others sustained serious injuries in separate collisions in the Algarve and Alentejo regions.

The first incident occurred in the Algarve at 12.22pm, when emergency services were alerted to a collision between a motorcycle and a car on the road to Monchique near Rasmalho, in the municipality of Portimão. The crash left two people seriously injured – a man and a woman – who were taken to Portimão Hospital.

Less than an hour later, at 1.12pm, another serious accident took place in the Algarve, this time in the municipality of Loulé. A 19-year-old died after the motorcycle he was riding on crashed into a parked car, with no one inside, on the 526 municipal road in Camacha. A 50-year-old man, who was also on the motorcycle, sustained minor injuries.

The third crash happened in the Alentejo, where a brutal three-car collision on the IP2 road just before 2pm caused the death of a 71-year-old woman and injured seven others.

GNR police in Portugal are currently carrying out their yearly ‘Christmas and New Year’ operation, which focuses on preventing accidents and dangerous behaviours by carrying out more police checkpoint operations and increasing the number of patrols near areas with “great concentrations of people”. The operation started on December 18 and runs until January 2.
