Train drain

The crisis has affected the number of people taking the train in Portugal.

Latest data from Eurostat shows that Portugal registered the largest drop in the EU when it came to passengers last year. The institute believes economic reasons lie behind the 11.4% decrease. Countries unaffected by the crisis – like Austria and Luxembourg – show a growing tendency to travel by train however, with an 8.6% and 8.2% rise in the number of passengers, respectively.
