Passport price hike
THE COST of a British passport will increase for adults from 66 to 72 pounds sterling, this October, the third price rise in less than two years.
The UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office says it needs the extra funding to meet the cost of helping British travellers. According to official figures, Brits make three times more trips abroad than 20 years ago, and so the number who encounter problems overseas such as lost passports, hospital visits and so on, has also risen. The last passport price increase, in October 2006, saw fees rise from 51 to 66 pounds. The increase was introduced to pay for improved background checks on applicants, face-to-face interviews for first-time passport applicants and the introduction of e-passports, which have a digital photograph in a microchip stored in the passport.
