Trial begins of Portuguese arrested for drug trafficking in Indonesia

The trial of two Portuguese men  – one painted as ‘very young and naíve’, the other less so – accused of trafficking of cocaine into Jakarta has begun in Indonesia. According to reports, both risk ‘heavy jail terms’, potentially even the death penalty. Consular authorities have been involved in trying to secure the men’s ‘release’ to Portuguese custody, but this will be no mean feat if they manage it. The older man, described as a ‘surfer from Cascais’, has denied the charges, albeit PJ police have been collaborating with counterparts in Jakarta, and seen CCTV images clearly showing him receiving the rucksack from the younger man after he arrived at Jakarta airport.
