Three men believed to be responsible for the latest case of immigrant slavery have been arrested by police in Serpa.
The trio, who are being charged with human trafficking, were denounced to police by the immigrants they had brought over to Portugal on the pretext of work picking olives in the Alentejo.
According to the Portuguese press, the work was meant to include accommodation and legal papers that would give the immigrants security – but instead the accommodation was sub-standard and the papers unforthcoming.
The three men are reported as being between the ages of 22 and 33. This is just one of a number of cases that has made news in Portugal recently.
