Two-and-a-half years down the line, the troika is now setting its sights on undeclared rental income in Lisbon. Critical of the decision, the association of Lisbon tenants (AIL) said in a press release that it had initially approached the troika in 2011 “but never received a reply”. Now, almost at the end of the adjustment programme, troika’s technicians have met with AIL representatives to find out how many “parallel rentals” exist in a bid to determine “whether the situation can be regularised for the government to receive more taxes”, a release from AIL has revealed. Meantime, Correio da Manhã reports that landlords with undeclared rental income stretching back to before 1990 “have until Monday to communicate to the Finanças the amounts received from tenants. Declarations must be accompanied by receipts”.
