UPDATE: Traffic reopened on the affected stretch of the motorway at 2.34pm, civil protection authorities have confirmed
Drivers on the A22 motorway in the Algarve faced an early-morning headache today after a truck carrying boxes of clothing overturned, scattering its cargo across the road and blocking traffic.
The accident happened at around 5.35am at kilometre 73 of the A22, between Loulé and Faro. Fortunately, no one was injured, according to Portugal’s civil protection authorities.
“The heavy goods vehicle veered off the road and its cargo scattered across the road, but there were no injuries,” a spokesperson for the Algarve’s Sub-Regional Command told Lusa news agency.
Traffic was completely halted in the eastbound direction between the Loulé Centro and Loulé Sul exits. Emergency teams were on-site, including 11 personnel and five vehicles, working to clear the scene and reopen the road.
As of 12.25pm, the road is still cut off to traffic as authorities work to remove the truck and the scattered cargo from the road, the Resident confirmed with the Algarve’s Sub-Regional Command.
