Twenty road deaths over festive period in Portugal

Nine people died between December 27 and January 1

Twenty people have died in road accidents in Portugal since the start of GNR police’s Operation ‘Christmas and New Year 2024/2025’ on December 18, a police source told Lusa news agency.

In the first phase of the operation, 11 people died, and in the second, nine,” Major Lígia Santos told Lusa.

Operation ‘Christmas and New Year 2024/2025’ ends today (Thursday) at midnight.

In the last six days, between midnight on Friday, December, 27 and 11pm on Wednesday, January 1, 908 accidents were recorded, resulting in nine fatalities, 24 serious injuries and 301 minor injuries, according to provisional figures.

The deaths in this second phase of the operation resulted from accidents in the districts of Setúbal, Viseu, Leiria, Faro, Santarém and Braga, with one fatality in each district, and in Lisbon, with three fatalities.

In a statement, GNR said that in the last six days 64,192 checks were carried out on drivers, 700 of whom were driving with excess alcohol and 338 of whom were arrested with a blood alcohol level of 1.2 g/l or more.

Additionally,124 people were arrested for driving without a licence.

Of the 12,786 fineable traffic offences detected, GNR police highlights 2,408 for speeding, 362 for excess alcohol and 301 for lack of or incorrect use of seat belts and/or car seats.

According to the data for the last six days, 173 offences were recorded for improper use of mobile phones, 1,027 for lack of compulsory periodic vehicle inspections and 390 for lack of compulsory civil liability insurance.
