Two killed, 10 seriously injured in 827 accidents over Easter

Operation Easter 2024 ends this evening

Two people died and 10 were seriously injured in the 827 accidents recorded by Portugal’s National Republican Guard (GNR) during Operation Easter 2024, which began last Thursday and ends today, according to the provisional balance sheet from the operation.

In a statement released this morning, the GNR – the force responsible for policing outside of urban areas – said that 240 people were also slightly injured between midnight on Wednesday and midnight on Sunday.

Of the 22,263 drivers checked by GNR officers, 303 were driving with excess alcohol and, of these, 165 were arrested for driving with a blood alcohol level of 1.2 g/l or more.

A further 56 people were arrested for driving without a valid licence, according to the GNR.

In total, the police force detected 2,913 road traffic offences, 642 for speeding, 455 for missing the mandatory periodic inspection, 153 for not having compulsory civil liability insurance and 76 for anomalies in lighting and signalling systems.

During the actions carried out by guards from the GNR’s Territorial Commands and the National Traffic Unit, 69 drivers were also found to be using their mobile phones improperly while driving and there were 85 cases of lack of or incorrect use of seat belts and/or child seats.

The GNR advises attentive, cautious and defensive driving to ensure that the festive period – indeed any period – is spent safely.

In particular this year, the GNR advised drivers to “adapt their speed to weather conditions, the state of the road and the volume of road traffic” and to “avoid manoeuvres that could in any way lead to accidents.”
