A two-metre Burmese python was found abandoned in a rubbish bin in Salgados, Albufeira on Friday morning (March 6).
The snake was found by a local resident who “immediately” contacted GNR police.
A team from Albufeira’s GNR environmental protection division (NPA) was quickly dispatched to rescue the snake, which has since been transferred into the care of the Parque Natural da Ria Formosa.
GNR’s Faro District Command has not yet identified the owner, saying this was the tenth abandoned reptile rescued by SEPNA in the last three years – though it is the first to have been abandoned in the Algarve.
