First death takes place in Air Force base, second on army base
In the space of two days, two young military men have died in ‘extraordinary circumstances’.
The first, a 25-year-old attached to the Nº 8 Air Force base at Macedo, in Ovar, was hit by a tyre during the towing of a helicopter yesterday. The impact caused his rib cage to fracture, sending him into cardiac arrest.
Today, another military man, aged 27, died following an ‘indisposition’ suffered during physical training at the Santa Margarida military camp in Santarém (an area of Portugal where summer temperatures are generally higher than they are anywhere else).
Both the Air Force and the Army have expressed their “enormous consternation” over these tragedies, and are offering devastated families and colleagues psychological support.
Inquiries into both incidents have been opened.
